Week 9 Q2

Dear families,

The concert was beautiful! Congratulations to the students for that effort! Thank you to Ms. Cable! Students performed beautifully!

Mrs. Bernal

What we learn this week!

Notes: Please read during the winter break at home. Reading shouldn’t be homework, children should read for pleasure. If possible, review phonograms and sight words. One more week!

Spalding: We reviewed all the phonograms learned! We introduce the new phonograms PH, AI, OA, KN. Students used their pink notebook to write their new spelling words/sight words (we, an, my, up). More two letters’ phonograms will be learned next semester. At the end of kindergarten, students must master 70 phonograms.

Reading reminders:

  •  Your child should read to an adult as daily homework.
  • Practice sight words as daily homework. Assessments on Wednesdays.
  • Minimal goal by the end of second quarter, master 36 sight words. (5 sight words a week), but the sky is the limit!

Literature: This week, we read John Henry, another tall tale. We compare the story to Casey Jones and remember about how these tall tales use exaggerations. Also, we talked about proper nouns and why they need to be capitalized. Finally, we reviewed the vowels and their use in words.

Math: This week, students learned how to make and break apart numbers from 2 to 10. We used linking cubes to model with hands on activities, wrote the number, practice how to count, and all the different combinations to make certain number.

History/Geography: For History, and our study of Native Americans, it was the turn to talk about the Northwest tribes. Students heard the story of a boy called Hilki. Hilki uses a canoe to fish with other men of the tribe. We briefly talk about  a Totem Pole.

Science: We finished our unit of pushes and pulls! Students reviewed all the concepts learned like motion, gravity, magnetism, and force. We assessed the concepts together. At the end of the week, we started a STEM lesson using gingerbread cookies. Students used their five senses to explore the gingerbread cookie.
