Week 1 Q3
Dear families,
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone is recharged
and ready to start our second semester. The Arctic/Antarctic animal
presentations went well. Students were very excited about presenting and
watching their peers present. This is probably their first time presenting in
front of an audience. Throughout their elementary school years, students will
have more opportunities to present and gain presentations skills.
Thank you for your support on this project,
Mrs. Bernal
What we learn this week!
Spalding: We reviewed all the phonograms learned last semester!
Students used their pink notebook to write their new spelling words/sight words
(good, time, have, blue). Two letters’
phonograms will be learned next week. At the end of kindergarten, students must
master 70 phonograms.
Reading
reminders:
- Your child should read to an adult as daily homework.
- Practice sight words as daily homework. Assessments on
Wednesdays.
- Minimal goal by the end of third quarter, master 68 sight
words. (5 sight words a week), but the sky is the limit!
Literature: We started the reading of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” (chapter book) Students are practicing how to listen to a chapter at a time for listening comprehension. Also, we started our Lapbook project for this fun book. Then, we read the story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". All week, students practice on retelling the story and identifying the story elements.
Math: Students started unit 7. First, we learned how to make a group of ten and keep counting on to figure out how many in total. We introduced numbers after 10, teen numbers to reach 20. We deepen our study on number from 11 to 16.
Science: Animal presentations took place this week! We started our unit for Weather. Students learned how to read the temperature on a digital thermometer, started their weather journal, and we are tracking the weather for some days.
History/Geography: Finishing our study of Native Americans from the Pacific Northwest, students created a Totem Pole, learned about how Native Americans celebrate when they put up one Totem Pole, and how the Totems tell a story. Also, we talked about moccasins, read a beautiful story and made our own moccasin.
