Week 5 Q2

Dear families,

We still have spots for the supplies for the Thanksgiving Feast. Please consider donating by signing up here Thanksgiving Feast

I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our veterans. I respect and honor all the soldiers that have sacrificed for our country.

Respectfully and gratefully,

Mrs. Bernal

What we learn this week!

Spalding: Two letter phonograms OU, IR, OY, were introduced. Remember to underline the two letter phonograms. This marking states that these are two letter phonograms making one sound. We reviewed QU and B from the previous first 26 phonograms. Students used their pink notebook to write their new spelling words/sight words (no, now, man, ten). At the end of the second quarter, students will perform a cumulative test for all the phonograms, 26 single letter phonograms, plus all the two letters’ phonograms taught during the quarter.

Reading reminders:

  • Your child should read to an adult as daily homework.
  • Practice sight words as daily homework. Assessments on Wednesdays.
  • Minimal goal by the end of second quarter, master 36 sight words. (5 sight words a week)

Literature: Our poem this week was “Gerorgie Porgie”! This week, we continued reading Aesop Fables. Monday, we read The Shepherd Boy and The Wolf. We discussed the moral of the fable and talked about honesty. Students agreed that honesty is a virtue we should always practice. On Thursday, we continue the reading of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. One chapter at a time!

Math: Through out the week, students compare two groups. First, we introduced the concept of “more than”, then “fewer than”. By the end of the week, students understood the concept of “same” or “equal”.

Science: For our Thanksgiving unit, we continued study about the Native Americans and tribes. On Monday, students created a canoe, understanding that this was a way Native Americans transported themselves. Also, students studied about the buffalo, on how this animal was so important to the Native Americans. At the end of the week, students work on a Teepee craft and a Navajo rug.

History/Geography: We are still visiting Antarctica! This week students explored habitats and animals. Our main study, was on the Penguins. Students learned some facts and created some fun activities.
