Week 3 Q2

Dear families,

We are finishing October! This quarter will be busy with activities and academic learning. Character day is next week on Wednesday!

Thank you to all the volunteers that helped us with reading and our Thursday Push and Pulls activity.

Thank you,

Mrs. Bernal

What we learn this week!

Spalding: Two letter phonograms OW, CH, AR were introduced. Remember to underline the two letter phonograms. This marking states that these are two letter phonograms making one sound. We reviewed D and F from the previous first 26 phonograms. Students used their pink notebook to write their new spelling words/sight words (a, it, is, she).

Reading: Your child should read to an adult as daily homework, along with practicing the sight words. Remember students should read the whole word unless they are not sure about the word, ask your child to use their phonograms to sound out each letter to figure out the word. Sight words assessment is on Wednesdays. When students master the first 100 words, we will continue with the next set of one hundred words. The sky is the limit! Remember the minimal goal for second quarter is mastering 36 sight words.

Literature: This week we compared the story of Johnny Appleseed and John Henry Legend. The story of John Henry, same as Johnny Appleseed, uses exaggerations. We compared both characters, and study more exaggerations used in legends and tall tales. Students reviewed proper nouns and capitalization. We continued our reading of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle chapter book. By the end of the week, we talked about the saying “When it rained cats and dogs”.

Math: We continued our study on shapes. Students sorted flat shapes based on their characteristics. Also, they matched flat shapes with real world pictures. Finally, students created composite pictures using all the shapes.

Science: What an exciting week learning about Push and Pulls! On Monday, students experimented by moving a ball using another ball and a rubber band. On Tuesday, we studied about speed, and how fast or slow an object could move. Wednesday, we talked about gravity and tested it. On Thursday, volunteers helped us create a ramp for a marble and tested it. Ask your child about these activities!

History/Geography: We are still in Asia! Students learned about Japan, the cherry blossoms, flag, and where is located on the map. Then, we visited Russia! Students created a mini book with important facts about Russia and located the largest country in the world on a map. Also, we talked about the Matryoshka dolls and read "The Littlest Matryoshka".
