Week 2 Q2
Dear families,
Spalding: New phonograms were taught this week! Two letter phonograms SH, EE, TH were introduced. Remember to underline the two letter phonograms. This marking states that these are two letter phonograms making one sound. We reviewed A and C from the previous first 26 phonograms. Students used their pink notebook to write their new spelling words/sight words (go, at, on).
Reading: Thank you for sending the reading bag back to school daily. Also, we appreciate you recording the reading minutes and the sight words practice in the reading log. Each day, students read as a whole group and one-on-one with a teacher or a volunteer. Practice makes perfect! On Wednesday, for the first time, we assessed the sight words. Keep practicing!
Literature: Our literature concentrated on
tall tales. Students learned that tall tales are told with some exaggerations to
magnify the tale or the characters. Students read the tall tale Johnny
Appleseed. We worked with the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Also, starting
this quarter, every Thursday, we will read the chapter book “Mrs. Piggle Wiggle”.
Students will practice their listening skills while the teacher reads one
chapter at a time. Students used adjectives to describe different pictures of dogs.
Finally, our poem this week was “Little Bo Peep.”
Math: We continued our study on shapes, both 2D and 3D shapes. Students sort solid shapes and put shapes together to build different models. We can identify how many sides and corners, or how many faces and corners. Students can compare shapes and find items around them that are the same shape as the ones they are studying. Let your child find items at home and tell you what shape that is.
Science: Following up with our pumpkin study, we reviewed the life cycle of a pumpkin, we
conducted a pumpkin observation. Students weighed, measured, and observed a
pumpkin. They created a booklet with some interesting facts about pumpkins. Also,
we follow up with the pumpkin seeds planted inside the pumpkin from before. Ask your child what happened to those seeds!
History/Geography: We left Africa to travel to Asia! Students located Asia on the map and discovered some interesting facts about Asia. Also, we studied about China, its culture, language and facts. Students learned about the Great Wall of China and the reason Ancient China built it.
