Week 1 Q2
Dear families,
Welcome back! It was wonderful to meet with you at the parent-teacher conferences. Thank you for attending! I hope you had a well-deserved and restful break. Students are fresh and energized to start a new quarter! They are ready for the next chapter and all the academic challenges we will encounter! We are always persevering and trying our best effort.
With appreciation,
Mrs. Bernal
Spalding:
Students reviewed all 26 phonograms learned in the first quarter. We reviewed the proper strokes for their best Spalding handwriting. For the first time, students used their Spalding Pink Notebook! Students were so excited about the new challenge! The purpose of this notebook is to write their spelling words learned for the week (me, do, and, go). The Spalding process is very rigorous on learning how to spell, read, and write the words using the learned phonograms and Spalding rules. At all times, students need to write with neat and clean Spalding handwriting.
Reading: For the first time this week, students took home their daily reading homework inside their reading bags. As we explained before, students will read their book, and practice their sight words daily. We will check sight words weekly on Wednesdays. Please make reading homework a habit along with their math and Spalding homework. Make sure your child is bringing the reading bag back to school daily.
Thank you for sending the reading bag back to school daily. Also, we appreciate you recording the reading minutes and the sight words practice in the reading log. Each day, students read as a whole group and one-on-one with a teacher or a volunteer. Practice makes perfect! Next Wednesday, for the first time, we will assess the sight words. Keep practicing!
Literature: Our literature concentrated on
tall tales. Students learned that tall tales are told with some exaggerations to
magnify the tale or the characters. Students read the tall tale Johnny
Appleseed. We worked with the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Also, starting
this quarter, every Thursday, we will read the chapter book “Mrs. Piggle Wiggle”.
Students will practice their listening skills while the teacher reads one
chapter at a time. Students used adjectives to describe different pictures of dogs.
Finally, our poem this week was “Little Bo Peep.”
Math: Shapes all over the place! We started our shapes unit! We talked about flat shapes (2D) and solid shapes (3D). On Thursday our study was on the cylinder and cone. By Friday, we were able to compare solid shapes. We are still reviewing how to count and write numbers all the way to 30.
Science: We are still in our unit Plants and Animals needs. This week, we conducted and investigation on seeds using pinto beans, and also, starting our investigation on the life cycle of a plant by planting some pinto beans.
History/Geography: We left Africa to travel to Asia! Students located Asia on the map and discovered some interesting facts about Asia. Also, we studied about China, its culture, language and facts. Students learned about the Great Wall of China and the reason Ancient China built it. The highlight of the week, Mrs. and Mr. Zhang (Eli's parents) visit our classroom to talk about China to the students. Ask your child about the experience.
