Week 9 Sep 27

Dear families,

Children have a natural curiosity and want to know more about everything. Is our job to keep their curiosity and nurture lifelong learners. Take the time to read fiction and non-fiction books to your child. Explore nature and spend time outdoors. Reflect about situations and how to learn from every experience. We need to teach students to learn how to learn.

Enjoy every moment with your child!

What we learn this week!

Notes: Please sing up for Parent-Teacher conferences using this link: Parent-Teacher Conference During conferences we will discuss your child's academic progress. Conferences will take place Tuesday October 8 and Wednesday October 9 after school (just a few for this day).

Spalding: The only two phonograms taught this week were Y and Z. Y has three sounds and can be a challenge for some students. Also, our cumulative test ended this week. We tested all the phonograms learned in first quarter. Coming back from fall break, we will review 26 phonograms learned in the first quarter. After the review, we will introduce more phonograms. At home, it will help if students review the phonograms as a daily habit.

Literature: For literature this week, we talked about integrity and citizen virtue while reading the story “The Empty Pot”. On Tuesday, we practiced capitalization, and on Wednesday, we learned how to capitalize the months of the year. Students practiced with opposites words and on Thursday we read “Momotaro Peach Boy” and discussed citizenship virtue. Finally, on Friday, we read “The Story about Ping”. Your child will be excited to retell those stories to you!

Math: Students reviewed all week! We counted to 10 from any given number, how to count back from 10 to any number, and they recognized and order numbers from 0 to 10. Also, we finished a cumulative test testing math concept for the first quarter.

Science: Last week was the life cycle of the frog, this week is the life cycle of a chicken! We read and discussed everything about chickens! Students worked with different activities throughout the week. Also, they created a mini booklet with chickens’ facts, and shared opinions.

History/Geography: Our travel around the world continues! On Monday, we said "good bye" to Europe by talking about ancient castles in Europe. Students created their own European castle. Later, we traveled to a new continent! Africa! Students learned where the continent is located and colored it on the map. We read facts about culture and traditions in Africa. Finally, students studied about Egypt. Ask your child about some facts they learned this week.
